A Connecticut school district policy went into effect Tuesday which requires educators to call students by their preferred pronouns and names.

Hartford Public School District in Hartford, Connecticut, implemented a new policy for teachers on Tuesday regarding the treatment of transgender and non-binary students. Educators must address a student by their preferred pronouns and name and failure to do so is a violation of the school policy. The school states in the policy that they will not reveal a student’s transgender status to parents unless told by the student to do so.  Educators also must attend a “transgender sensitivity” training which will focus on “what it means to treat all people respectfully and equally.”

Educators are also advised to “eliminate the practice of segregating students by gender,” according to the policy. When required, especially in health education classes, students should be assigned with groups that best fits their “gender identity.”

Transgender and non-binary students are permitted to compete in sports and use restrooms based on their gender identity, the policy said. Locker room accommodations will be decided on a case-by-case basis to give students the best option to keep their transgender status a secret.

The district says they will not adopt a dress code that requires students to dress in accordance with their gender identity. Schools must work to “keep transgender and gender non-conforming students at the original school site” rather than offering a transfer option.
