A Purdue University student was arrested Wednesday morning after he called authorities to report his roommate was killed, according to university officials.
“I write to let you know that early this morning, one of our students was killed in his residence hall room. The suspect, the victim’s roommate, called police to report the incident and is in custody,” Purdue President Mitch Daniels said. “This is as tragic an event as we can imagine happening on our campus and our hearts and thoughts go out to all of those affected by this terrible event.”

Director of Media and Public Relations Tim Doty said the victim’s roommate made a call to police around 12:44 a.m.
Authorities identified the victim as 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda of Indianapolis, the Indy Star reported, citing the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office. Chheda was just 10 days shy of his 21st birthday, and studied science in his senior year, Purdue University Police Department Chief Lesley Wiete said Wednesday.
Police identified the suspect as junior Ji Min Sha, a junior from Korea studying cyber security, Doty said.
Purdue University is offering support and counseling to anyone affected.
