The family of a former high school football star who was killed Friday believes their son’s best friend killed him.

Terry Petry, 24, was shot in the chest Friday in Missouri City, Texas, according to ABC 13. His former teammate and best friend, Alex Tristen Francis, is charged with his murder.

Petry and Francis played football for Ridge Point High School, according to the outlet. Petry was first-team all-district and was the district’s MVP while at Ridge Point. He went on to go to the University of Missouri, spent one year at Blinn College, and then another year at Texas Southern University.

“What? Come on, you got the wrong man,” said Petry’s mother Kathy Davis, the outlet reported. “I said, ‘That’s his best friend!’ I couldn’t believe it.” (RELATED: High School Quarterback Killed While Trying To Help Driver In Crash)

Both Petry and Francis often slept over at each other’s houses, ABC 13 reported. Francis reportedly spent the night at Davis’s house the night of the shooting.

“Alex has spent the night on my couch, would take a shower. I fixed him breakfast. He liked my beef stew,” Davis said of Francis. “That’s the hole that’s there. I don’t understand. I want to know why.”

Police are still investigating the shooting, but they believe there was some sort of “disturbance” before the shooting, according to ABC 13.
