A high school quarterback from Florida was struck and killed by a car Sunday while trying to help a driver who had driven off the road.

Nick Miner, 18, had stopped on the side of the road to help another driver get back on the road when another car hit his truck, causing it to flip and throwing him, according to Fox 35.

“It hurts. He was a brother of the family. I wish he was still here,” Miner’s teammate Parker Stoner said, according to Fox 35. “Funny, always the class clown, but a leader on the field. Never gave up, always gave his all.”

A 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old girl were standing near the vehicles when the driver crashed into Miner’s truck, Fox 35 reported. They were both hit by Miner’s vehicle and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Miner’s dad, Derek Miner, was there when the crash occurred, according to Fox 35. “I don’t think I’m ever going to get that picture out of my head. Of my baby boy stuck under that truck,” Derek Miner said, reported Fox 35. “We’re all broken, we’re all lost, we’re in shock right now.” (RELATED: REPORT: Dwayne Haskins Was Hit By Multiple Vehicles When He Was Killed In Florida)

“I know I speak for our entire East River High community when I express the grief felt at the loss of one of our own,” East River High School Principal Becky Watson said in a letter. “My thoughts and prayers are with this student’s family and friends as they go through this extremely difficult time.”

Charges are reportedly pending in the crash, according to Fox 35.
