MSNBC host Chris Jansing told a White House official Thursday that Americans did not seem to believe that President Joe Biden was “delivering” for them.

“The White House argument has been the same all year long,” Jansing told Jen O’Malley Dillon, deputy chief of staff at the White House. “For months he’s been making this argument, and yet our latest poll here at NBC shows only 16% believe the economy is excellent or good. Fifty-nine percent expect a recession within a year. So why isn’t that argument working?” (RELATED: ‘He’s Gotta Own It’: Harris Faulkner Spars With Dem Consultant Over Biden’s Blame For Economy)

While Gross Domestic Product increased by 2.6% in the third quarter of 2022, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, it dropped by 1.4% in the first quarter and declined 0.6% in the second quarter. Two consecutive quarters of falling GDP is often considered a recession, according to Investopedia.

“[Biden]’s crossing the country highlighting the exact things that are impacting the American people and what we’re doing about it,” O’Malley Dillon said. “Certainly the Inflation Reduction Act, there’s progress made but a number of those things come into account Jan. 1. He’s also making clear there’s a real contrast on the economy.”

The Consumer Price Index rose by 8.2% year-over-year in September, following year-over-year increases of 8.3% in August, 8.6% in July, 9.1% in June and 8.5% in May.

“They’re not buying it,” Jansing told O’Malley Dillon.
