Actor Jeremy Renner remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery Monday for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries following an accident involving a snow plow in Reno, Nevada.

The 51-year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe star “has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition,” his representative told People. Renner was airlifted to hospital after the snow plow he was using rolled onto him on his property in Reno, Nevada on New Year’s Day.

Initial reports indicated Renner suffered a severe leg injury and lost a substantial amount of blood at the scene of the accident. A neighbor, who happened to be a doctor, has been credited with saving Renner’s life by fabricating a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, according to TMZ.

Local police have launched an investigation to determine why the machine’s advanced safety features didn’t prevent it from rolling onto Renner, according to TMZ. (RELATED: Rally Car Driver Ken Block Dead At 55)

“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families,” Renner’s representative said in a statement to People.

“They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”
