A man sporting a “cop killer” tattoo on his chest was arrested Saturday night after allegedly shooting at a Florida City police officer, according to 7 News Miami.

Police claimed Virgilio Salgado, 28, fired at the officer without hurting him as the officer sat in his patrol vehicle during an attempted traffic stop Saturday morning, fleeing the scene in a vehicle he was later caught driving, the outlet reported. Salgado faces charges including aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and driving with a suspended license. “If he’s bold enough to do that, he’d be bold enough to do it to somebody else, a random person, not even a cop,” a local resident said, expressing thanks that the officer was unharmed, according to 7 News Miami. Salgado sports a prominent chest tattoo that reads “Cop Killer,” and the involved officer’s body camera footage reportedly helped detectives to identify him.

About 34 police officers nationwide were shot on duty from Jan. 1 to 31, a roughly 89% increase compared to the same period in 2022, the Fraternal Order of Police reported.

The Florida City Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
