The bodies of two men were discovered in a Houston home on Saturday after police responded to a welfare check.

Authorities discovered the remains of two dead men, believed to be in their 60s, inside the property, but only one of them appeared to be in a state of decomposition, according to KPRC. Deputies responded to the property after neighbors called in for a welfare check, claiming they smelled a foul odor, saw flies around the garage, and had not seen one of the men for months.

When deputies arrived at the home around 8:00 p.m., they banged the door but no one answered. Footage shows them making entry, before a gunshot echoed through the home almost immediately, People reported.

A man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was discovered in one of the bedrooms and a badly decomposed body was found in another bedroom, KPRC continued. Investigators stated they believe the second man had been dead for months. (RELATED: REPORT: Coroner Says He Cried, Couldn’t Eat For A Week In Most Heinous Crime He’s Ever Seen)

A neighbor told KPRC that the two men, who had lived together for some time, kept to themselves. The one assumed to have been living with the corpse for months went to work every day, the neighbor told the outlet.

The cause of the death for the highly decomposed man is currently being identified. Neither individual has been named by authorities as the investigation is ongoing, The Associated Press reported.
