Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin tried to dodge questions about his support for former President Donald Trump when pressed by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

Youngkin joined the debut of Collins’ new 9 p.m. show where he was asked about his support for Trump in the 2024 presidential race.

“You also did put out a campaign video that a lot of people thought looked like a presidential campaign video. When you talk going what Republicans need to do to win back the White House. You talk about mirroring what you’re doing. Do you think Donald Trump is the best option right now?” Collins, a former Daily Caller reporter, asked.

“Here’s what I believe: We will nominate a candidate who will win.”

“You think whoever the Republican is will defeat Biden?”

“I think it is time for a Republican leader. What is demonstrated is that foreign policy weakness and disarray in the economy, and a full lack of understanding about how all the pieces fit together has resulted in America struggling. Inflation is the biggest issue on voters’ minds. Crime is the second biggest issue, and third is education. There is nothing that has come out of the Biden White House to address these most important kitchen table issues. And for it to be reflected in the candidate, I’ll back whoever the candidate is. I think it is a great chance for Republicans to lead again.”

“So even if that candidate is Donald Trump, when he was indicted recently you posted a tweet saying it was unprecedented. You called it a sad day in the country and you referred to it as a two-tiered justice system. Now that we’ve seen the indictment, do you still think he should not be held accountable for what is alleged?” Collins asked. “What we’ve seen happen to the former president is inconsistent with what we’ve seen happen in other times with elected officials. I think this is what folks are concerned about. There are plenty of allegations against the current Biden White House. And will in Virginia, one of the things we saw was parents standing up at school board meetings and demanding transparency and accountability.”

Youngkin has been viewed as a possible presidential candidate, though he announced on May 1 that he wouldn’t run for president “this year.” Sources, however, told Axios the first time governor was “reconsidering.”

“He’d be in his own lane: he’s not never-Trump, and he’s not Trump-light.”
