The man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students in November 2022 provided an alibi to court Wednesday, according to documents.

Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of slaying 20-year-old Ethan Chapin; 21-year-old Madison Mogen; 20-year-old  Xana Kernodle; and 21-year-old Kaylee Goncalves, was asked to provide an alibi to the court Wednesday, indicating his whereabouts on the night the four college students were murdered, according to CBS News.

While his lawyers objected to the state’s request for an alibi, they did tell the court that Kohberger their client “has long had a habit of going for drives alone,” and that on the night and morning of the murders, he had done so, though he could not specify the exact location of his whereabouts, the outlet reported.

“Mr. Kohberger is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time; at this time there is not a specific witness to say precisely where Mr. Kohberger was at each moment of the hours between late night November 12, 2022, and early morning November 13, 2022,” the court filing said, according to CBS News. Kohberger’s attorneys maintained that corroborating evidence that would place Kohberger away from the scene of the crime would be obtained through cross-examination of witnesses, the outlet stated.

A not guilty plea was entered on Kohberger’s behalf during a May 22 arraignment hearing after he chose to stand silent. In June 2023, court documents revealed that law enforcement officials have matched Kohberger’s DNA to that found at the crime scene.

Kohberger has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder. His trial is expected to begin in October.
