August 08, Def Jam Producer And Singer-Songwriter, Dies At 31

Def Jam producer and singer-songwriter August 08 died at the age of 31, the record label confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

“The entire Def Jam family mourns the tragic loss of Ray ‘August 08’ Jacobs. A brilliant songwriter, an accomplished musician and a singular artist, August will remain in our memory as a beloved colleague and friend,” Def Jam wrote in a statement released to Variety. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones,” they said. August 08’s official cause of death has not been confirmed at this time.

August 08’s talents were credited on DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One,” and he was the first signee on Jhené Aiko’s Def Jam Recordings label venture, Allel Sound, according to Variety. He also previously belonged to the 88rising collective, and the camp paid tribute to him with a touching post on their Instagram page Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Ray Jacobs, also known as AUGUST 08,” they wrote.

“RIP August the kindest and most talented genius you will be missed beyond words. Thank you for being an amazing mentor and a steadfast friend through all these years,” they said.

88rising included a personal address to the late August 08 in their post.

“We are forever grateful to you and the joy you brought in every room, through every song. Your energy, guidance and care gave so much inspiration and strength that will be carried on always.”

August 08’s birth name was August Grant. He signed with Allel Sound in July 2022 and released a two-part album project called “Seasick.”

The first installment, “Towards the Sun,” was released by Def Jam in April 2022. August 08’s debut EP “Father” came out in 2018, followed by “Happy Endings with an Asterisk” the following year and “Emotional Cuh” in 2020. (RELATED: Former ‘Bachelorette’ Contestant Falsely Declared Dead At 36)

The talented artist was also credited on tracks with Jackson Wang, Sabrina Claudio and Ty Dolla $ign, among other notable artists. He will forever be remembered by the footprint he left in the music industry, and adored by all those fortunate enough to have known him.
