A record-low number of Americans believe 80-year-old President Joe Biden inspires confidence as the country’s leader, according to a poll released Thursday.

The figure of 28% is down 7% from March. Twenty-six percent of Americans believe that Biden has the stamina to serve as the president, according to a CNN poll, conducted by SSRS Research, an independent polling company. About 67% of Democrat-leaning voters want a different candidate than Biden for the 2024 election. Of Democrat-leaning voters, 51% say the president “inspires confidence,” which is down 19% since March, the poll shows. About 49% of the party think Biden has the sharpness to effectively be president, dropping 14% since March.

Approximately 70% of Americans believe that things within the country are going poorly and 51% say the government needs to be taking more action to fix issues, the poll shows. About 68% of Americans worry that the president cannot understand the earlier generation’s worries.

Recent polling has shown similar data; a majority of Americans, 77%, believe that Biden is too old to effectively run the country. The aging president is a concern for 69% of Democrats and 89% of Republicans.

A vast majority of Americans, 73%, say Biden is also too old to run for reelection in 2024, a Monday poll by The Wall Street Journal shows.

The president defended concerns about his age during a Monday speech in Philadelphia.

“Someone said, ‘You know, that Biden, he’s getting old,'” Biden said.

“Well, guess what, guess what … the only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom,” Biden continued. “I’ve been doing this longer than anybody, and guess what, I’m going to continue to do it, with your help.”
