Climate activist Greta Thunberg has weighed in on the Israel-Hamas war, indicating that she stands with the Palestinians.

Thunberg, an eco-activist who has addressed the United Nations and was TIME Magazine’s 2019 “person of the year,” shared a photo on Instagram in which she is holding a placard with the words “stand with Gaza.” It is the first time that the prominent climate protester has taken a stand in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as her public position was effectively neutral in 2021 when the conflict last boiled over into open conflict between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Islamic terrorists.

“Today we are striking in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza,” Thunberg wrote in the photo’s caption. “The world needs to speak up and call for and (sic) immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected.” (RELATED: Green Groups That Have Backed Palestinians Offer Justifications, Silence After Hamas Attacks)

Thunberg joins a growing chorus of voices on the political left who have called upon Israel to cease its operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The IDF has launched an extensive aerial bombardment campaign of the Gaza Strip ahead of a widely-expected ground invasion to eliminate Hamas, which launched a terrorist attack against Israel on Oct. 7 that saw terrorists murder at least 1,400 people, rape women, execute toddlers and abduct at least 200 people to hold hostage in the Gaza Strip.

Other young activists flank Thunberg in the photo, holding signs that read “free Palestine” and “this Jew stands with Palestine.” Another activist holds a sign that calls for “climate justice now!” though it is unclear how the issue of climate justice is directly related to the conflict.

“Because what Greta is doing, that she is now showing solidarity with Gaza while not saying a word about the massacres of Israelis, shows that she is actually not in favor of the Palestinians, but that she is sweeping the terror of the Palestinians or Hamas and Islamic Jihad under the table as if it did not exist,” Arye Sharuz Shalicar, a spokesman for the Israeli army, told Politico of Thunberg’s messaging.

Thunberg was arrested and charged with a public order offense for her actions during a climate protest in London on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. She also addressed the United Nations in September 2019, delivering a speech that accused world leaders of stealing her childhood by failing to take sufficient action to counter climate change. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying… how dare you,” she said during the speech.
