Close allies to President Joe Biden are ramping up an operation called the “bubble wrap” strategy to keep the now 81-year-old president from tripping and falling ahead of the 2024 election, according to a New York Times (NYT) report.

While some current and former Biden administration officials argue that staff close to the president should stop acting like they don’t trust the president, especially when interacting with the press, others are reportedly unveiling a strategy that keeps the president protected and rested, according to the NYT. Deemed the “bubble wrap” strategy, some within Biden’s administration reportedly say the president should avoid long international trips and be allowed more time to rest up to avoid any viral mishaps, the NYT reported. “I think a lot of voters, and young people in particular, who are not at all put off by his political positions or accomplishments, are put off by his utter failure as a regal persona,” John B. Judis, a political analyst told the NYT. “And I don’t know how that can be fixed. Not by bicycling. Biden’s best hope in that regard is the voters’ perception of Trump as a bad or even evil father who wants to wreck the family.”

A majority of Americans, 77 percent, were concerned about Biden’s age in September while a record-low number of Americans believe that the president inspires confidence as the country’s leader.

Seventy-one percent of voters in several battleground states and 54 percent of his own party believe Biden is “too old” to be in office, a New York Times/Siena College poll showed.

As concerns about the president’s age continue to rise, the White House repeatedly points to Biden’s track record and brushes off worries, the NYT reported. Some strategists say concerns about the 81-year-old’s stamina will fade once he engages more with former President Donald Trump and others encouraged Biden to keep focusing on public service as well has his relationships.

“Because of President Biden’s decades of experience in public service and deep relationships with leaders in Congress, he passed legislation that has helped to create more than 14 million jobs, lower prescription drug costs, invest in America’s infrastructure and technology and led to the strongest economic recovery in the developed world,” Ben LaBolt, the White House communications director, told the NYT.

“He has revitalized alliances on the world stage — cultivated over many years — to promote America’s interests and respond forcefully when global crises arise,” LaBolt continued.
