New York Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman earmarked over $1 million for a group that advocates for kindergarteners to be taught about “climate change.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee’s proposed spending bill includes a $1,650,000 earmark, requested by Bowman, for the Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC), an organization that seeks to assist “marginalized communities in preparing for climate change’s adverse effects,” to build “environmentally friendly” housing and commercial space. Bowman was censured by the House of Representatives in December for pulling a fire alarm in the Capitol moments before a key stopgap vote to avert a government shutdown, with a House Ethics Committee investigation later concluding that his original statements on the matter were “misleading.” (RELATED: Dem Senators Earmark $1 Million For LGBT Center Hosting ‘Anti-Capitalist’ Financial Planner)

“The project, as proposed, will create 317 units of mixed-income housing, artist live/workspace, parking, and ground floor community facility space in a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building in the city’s south side and establish 25,000 square feet of commercial space located at 222-224 Washington Street, Mount Vernon,” Bowman said in the original request to the House Committee on Appropriations.

The nonprofit advocates for “climate change and its impact to be incorporated in kindergarten to professional schools” along with providing “strategies to survive in a climate-destructive world” to community members.

The requested funds are listed under the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The group’s advisory committee features Aaron Mair, former president of the left-wing environmental organization, the Sierra Club. Mair was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump during his tenure atop the Sierra Club from 2015 to 2017, calling Trump a “pure racist bigot” and praising Cuban dictator Fidel Castro over the former president.

“We founded the Environmental Leaders of Colors to work towards making the resources, education, and opportunity available to all residents regardless of race, gender, physical ability, country of origin, mental ability, sexual orientation, culture, age, sexual preference, religion, social status, and income, to assist in the fight against the devastating impact of climate change,” the ELOC notes on its website.

In February, Bowman announced the Congressional Hip Hop Power and Justice Task Force, a new caucus that aims to use hip-hop music to support left-wing policies. The task force’s goal is to lead initiatives to address economic inequality, affordable housing and racial justice.

Bowman’s office and the ELOC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
