Katie Porter, a Democratic candidate who ran in California’s 2024 Senate race, claimed Wednesday on Twitter that the primary was rigged after placing 3rd.

“Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign and voted to shake up the status quo in Washington. Because of you, we had the establishment running scared — withstanding 3 to 1 in TV spending and an onslaught of billionaires spending millions to rig this election,” Porter wrote in part. The Californian politician thanked her supporters and wrote that such support was evidence that people want new leaders who would “break the mold, can’t be bought, and push for accountability in government and across our economy” in her tweet thread.

“Special interests like politics as it is today because they control the politicians. As we’ve seen in this campaign, they spend millions to defeat someone who will dilute their influence and disrupt the status quo. But take my word for it: I’ll never stop fighting for you,” Porter tweeted.

Porter’s comments were challenged by community notes arguing that rigging implied “illegal manipulation of electoral outcomes” and that simply being outspent did not fall under this category.

With 57 percent of ballots in for the California Senate race at the time of writing, Porter has placed in 3rd place with 13.9 percent of the vote, NBC News reported. Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff reportedly won the primary while Republican candidate Steve Garvey secured second place. Porter is a current member of the House of Representatives, according to her own biography.
