New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman called on President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election in a column published Friday morning.

Biden appeared to freeze several times and made verbal gaffes during the 90-minute debate moderated by CNN hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash Thursday night. Friedman, who Joe Biden reportedly considers as one of his favorite journalists, called the debate a “heartbreaking moment” in the op-ed. “The Biden family and political team must gather quickly and have the hardest of conversations with the president, a conversation of love and clarity and resolve,” Friedman wrote. “To give America the greatest shot possible of deterring the Trump threat in November, the president has to come forward and declare that he will not be running for re-election and is releasing all of his delegates for the Democratic National Convention.”

Betting odds increased during the debate for Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom to be the party nominee. Vice President Kamala Harris has also been speculated as a potential replacement.

“If Vice President Kamala Harris wants to compete, she should,” Friedman wrote. “But voters deserve an open process in search of a Democratic presidential nominee who can unite not only the party but the country, by offering something neither man on that Atlanta stage did on Thursday night: a compelling description of where the world is right now and a compelling vision for what America can and must do to keep leading it — morally, economically and diplomatically.”

Biden invited the NYT columnist to the White House for lunch in May 2022, where the two had an off-the-record conversation. Friedman referred to the president in the op-ed as a “friend of mine since we traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan together after 9/11.”

Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
