Lionsgate dropped the trailer “Greedy People” Monday and you may find it difficult to not put yourself in the shoes of almost every single character in this dark comedy.

If it wasn’t produced by Lionsgate, I’d have thought “Greedy People” was the most enticing new indie movie coming to theaters in August. It has all the hallmarks of a superb, off-the-wall dark comedy, and I’m not just talking about the dulled-out aesthetic and superb casting with everyone’s favorite mainstream indie crossover Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Also joining the cast is Uzo Aduba, who we all loved in “Orange is the New Black,” Jim Gaffigan, Blake Nelson and Simon Rex are as weird as always.

The film follows Patel and Gordon-Levitt’s characters as they deal with a ridiculous murder and the discovery of $1 million in cash next to the body. Posing the question: what would you do in this situation?

“Greedy People’ is a hugely entertaining crime thriller in every way,” Lionsgate director of acquisitions Allison Lynch told Variety of the movie back in February. “Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel lead an incredible cast through twists and turns that range from the hilarious to the horrific – and the movie always keeps you guessing.” (RELATED: Can You Make Out What The ‘White Noise’ Movie Trailer Is About?)

We need something weird like this. It’s been a while since the last good, bizarre indie movie dropped — “Self Reliance” — so we’re definitely overdue for something fresh.

The movie opens in theaters on August 23. I almost guarantee it’ll do okay numbers at the box office. But it has the potential to become a cult classic once it hits streaming services.
