Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant hailed the information as “a significant milestone in the process of dismantling Hamas as a military and governing authority in Gaza, and in the achievement of the goals of this war” and called Deif “the ‘Osama Bin Laden of Gaza'” in a tweet. Gallant vowed that Israel would continue to hunt down “Hamas terrorists.”

“Deif was targeted in a strike at a compound belonging to Rafa’a Salameh, the commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade, in the Khan Younis area, on July 13,” Emannuel Fabian, a Times of Israel military correspondent, wrote in a tweet. Fabian added that Deif had “commanded the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades for over two decade” and “was an architect of Hamas’s October 7 onslaught on Israel, the deadliest attack in the country’s history, when some 1,200 people were killed and around 251 others dragged to Gaza as hostages.”

Even before Oct. 7, Deif was a wanted man by the Israelis for having joined Hamas in 1987 during the first Palestinian intifada and was added to the list of Israel’s most wanted terrorists in 1995 “for his involvement in the planning and execution of a large number of terror attacks, including many bus bombings in the 1990s and early 2000s,” the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) wrote in a press release. He has survived at least seven attempts on his life over a 25-year-period.
Deif was involved in a number of Hamas operations over the years, was the architect of the terror organization’s strategy to built tunnels in the Gaza Strip for military purposes and played a role in promoting the strategy to launch missiles on Israel, Ynet reported. The Hamas leader was the one who called the Oct. 7 operation the “Al-Aqsa Flood” in a video statement, the FDD said.
