KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — Police say five members of a family, including four children, were killed when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle in southern Afghanistan.

Border security commander Abdul Razaq says the bombing occurred Friday as the family was heading home after visiting a shrine in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, near the Pakistan border.

Abdul Razaq says police believe the family’s vehicle wasn’t targeted but hit a land mine meant for police or other officials who are frequently targeted by insurgents.

He says the mother and four children — three boys and a girl — were killed while the father and another male relative were wounded.
