LORAIN, Ohio – A man says he is the victim of a crime, but is being treated as a criminal because he is transgender.

Philip Lener, of Lorain, says his decision to begin the process of transforming into a woman has made his life very difficult.

“I’ve been more happier dressed this way living this way than anything and I get people downgrading me, which I don’t like,” Lener says.

But he also says his gender status played a role in a beating he suffered at a Lorain apartment, where he says he was a guest at a party on Wednesday night.

“The next thing I know, I’m bleeding from my nose, my mouth, I’ve got abrasions on my head, got a scratch here on my face, they broke my nail on my hand,” Lener explains.
