Steven Hodgson, 33, tortured church-goer Patricia Thompson, forcing her to give him her bank PIN number before killing her, Teesside Crown Court heard.
He then calmly called a taxi and walked out carrying two suitcases containing her property, including jewellery, as the driver waited outside, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Detectives later discovered Hodgson had checked out the neighbourhood on the Google Earth website two days before he struck.
