Facebook will be hosting a cybersecurity discussion that will be live-streamed on its “Facebook Security” page on Friday.

The live broadcast from the company’s Palo Alto headquarters, scheduled for 2 p.m. EST, is part of the the social media company’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month partnership with the National Cyber Security Alliance.

Panelists will include Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan, NCSA Executive Director Michael Kaiser and Linda McCarthy, former senior director of Internet safety at Symantec.

“Making the Internet safer and more secure requires vigilance and knowledge of how to protect ourselves,” said Sullivan in a statement. “With cyber attacks on the rise, practicing safe online behaviors is more important than ever.”

Facebook debuted a suite of safety tools in April designed not only to improve protection from unauthorized access of user accounts, but also increase user safety from online harassment. Within the Facebook social ecosystem, social reporting is designed to give users the tools to ask others in their network for help in uncomfortable or compromising scenarios that play out on the social network.

“Safety has always been a social experience: as friends and family, we look out for each other and pass along advice to help each other stay safe,” said Arturo Bejar, director of engineering at Facebook, on the company’s blog. “Safety on Facebook works the same way. By keeping each other informed, people make Facebook a more trusted environment.”

The social network, which announced the event Monday with a status update on its “Facebook Security” page, is currently facing criticism from the U.S. government over how the company treats user data privacy. Federal Trade Commissioner Joe Liebowitz, while not singling out Facebook specifically, explained Tuesday at the National Press Club that he shared the “general privacy concerns” expressed by Congress in recent weeks.
