Democratic New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg has died at the age of 89, his Senate office confirmed to The Daily Caller on Monday.

Lautenberg was the oldest serving U.S. senator and the last lawmaker in the Senate to have served in World War II.

In a statement, Lautenberg’s office revealed that he “passed away due to complications from viral pneumonia at 4:02 a.m. today at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell.”

The task of replacing Lautenberg in the short-term falls to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“Lautenberg is survived by his wife, Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg; six children and their spouses,” the statement from Lautenberg’s office said.
