A group of Sri Lankan police officers have come under fire after they pretended to marry nine couples of sniffer dogs.

The country’s culture and arts minister T. B. Ekananayake condemned the ceremony as a mockery of marriage, reports The Guardian.

The dogs were dressed in hats and shawls and stood on decorated platforms for the ceremony. A real officiant presided over the ceremonies, which were attended by a crowd of onlookers.

After the dogs were married, they were driven away in pairs for their honeymoons.

Police spokesman Buddhika Siriwardena apologized for any offense and explained that the aim was to breed police dogs in the country. Sri Lanka currently imports their police dogs, spending almost a half a million dollars to bring special dogs from the Netherlands in 2011.
