A selfie a California firefighter took to show his family he was fine went viral on Facebook.

According to CBS8, San Marcos firefighter Tim Bergon took the selfie, then the owners of an Escondido restaurant posted it on their Facebook and Twitter accounts on May 16. The photo was taken in San Marcos as the men fought the Cocos Fire.

“When you see how exhausted they are, it just makes you really really grateful for all that they do, and all they always do,” owner Monica Calles told CBS News 8.

From there, the photo of Bergon smiling and other firefighters resting in the background took off.

Currently, the photo has over 34,000 likes, with thousands of people sharing and commenting on the photo.

“We were kind of shocked at how people responded honestly but I guess it just really shows you how much that meant to everybody because of what they did,” Calles said.

Many of the comments on the picture are people thanking the firefighters for their hard work, with some calling them heroes.

And Plan 9 Alehouse has been thanking the hard-working men as well by giving the firefighters free food.

Now, according to a post on the Plan 9 Alehouse Facebook page, the restaurant has set up a “Firefighter’s Tab” in response to people asking how they can thank the local firefighters. The restaurant is accepting donations through May 31, and 100 percent of the donations will go to paying firefighters’ tabs.
