Two puppies were born in Spain with green fur, The Daily Mail reports.
“I thought the puppies were maybe dirty somehow and I tried to clean them,” said owner and breeder Aido Vallelado, “but the color wouldn’t come off and then I realized it was the color of their fur.”
One of them died shortly after birth, but the other is still fighting and starting to lose the green color.
Apparently this has happened before. A green Labrador puppy was born in 2012 in England, and the cause was found to be exposure to a substance called biliverdin, which was in the placenta.
Vet Daniel Valverde is looking into the cause of the green coloring of the newest pups.
“There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature,” he said. “I am carrying out virological and bacteriological tests to try and find an answer.”
