New York’s chief medical examiner revealed last week that Joan Rivers died as a result of a “predictable complication” from her throat surgery, namely because of a lack of oxygen to her brain. However, it is unclear exactly what happened, and will likely stay that way because her daughter Melissa Rivers asked doctors not to perform an autopsy on her mother, TMZ reports.
“Sources connected to the NYC Medical Examiner tell us … Melissa Rivers was despondent when Joan died and told doctors she did not want an autopsy performed. According to New York law, doctors will honor such a request if there’s no evidence of criminality associated with the death.”
Rivers had visited Yorkville Endoscopy Aug. 28 for aryngoscopy and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Shortly after her death, reports surfaced that a doctor, who has been fired, performed an unplanned biopsy on her vocal chords. The doctor, Lawrence Cohen, was also allegedly taking selfies while in the operating room. (RELATED: Joan Rivers Died Because Of Lack Of Oxygen To Her Brain)
