Speaking at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, President Barack Obama made a joke comparing the military to Santa Claus which fell awkwardly flat.
“Every year, you never stop serving. You never stop giving,” Obama told the soldiers. “You guys are like Santa in fatigues.”
Obama paused for the laugh line, which only got subdued chuckles. He pressed on regardless, “Although, I’ll bet one of those C-130s is a little more efficient than Santa’s sleigh.”
That line was met with tepid applause and whoops from isolated members of the audience (presumably those who work on C-130s). “I figured I’d get something out of our guys on that,” the president said.
