Police trying to help a Hawaii man allegedly ended up killing him.

A Toyota Corolla hit 19-year-old Michael Kocher Jr. while he was walking down the highway at night, but witnesses say he was still alive until a police officer responding to the scene accidentally hit Kocher a second time, The Garden Island reports.

Rayne Banasihan, who stopped to help Kocher after the first car hit him, told TGI that “he was alive and responsive” before the responding police car hit him. Screeching tires was the only warning they had before the cop car struck the teen.

The officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation, according to a county press release. Kocher was pronounced dead at the scene.
