The federal government has a serious interest in how gay men are meeting up for sex and how much they’re enjoying it.

The National Institute of Mental Health has shelled out $432,000 in taxpayer money to fund studies on how gay men use hookup apps like Grindr, The Washington Free Beacon reports. The two studies, both done by Columbia University, sought to determine if men who use GPS dating apps are more likely to engage in sexually risky behavior.

The government also recently gave $462,893 to the University of Southern California to study risky decision-making in gay men.

According to the grant, the researchers want to know if using these apps increases “arousal” and how it affects the emotional states of gay men when they meet up for sex. They think that these factors could make a difference in if men make risky sexual decisions. The researchers also think these apps could increase the frequency of gay sex between men.

“Furthermore, given the expediency with which men are able to arrange sexual encounters using these applications, there is cause to question if, when, and how sexual negotiation and serostatus disclosure occurs,” the grant’s abstract states.

On a related note, the government also spent big studying the sexual habits of obese girls.
