Writer Chauncey DeVega has seized the top of Salon.com with his declaration that “White America must answer” for the dreadful shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

“While this horrific event is one more murderous and racist blow to the African-American community in Charleston,” writes DeVega, “the reporting on the mass shooting at Emanuel Baptist is an additional affront via the White Racial Frame as practiced by the mainstream news media.”

While DeVega’s article appears to be a reaction to particular circumstances of Charleston, however, he actually has made an entire career of race-baiting, and more particularly constant attacks on white people. His articles published on the progressive website AlterNet in the past year include:

Overall, 28 out of 52 articles DeVega has listed on the site include the word “white” in the title, and most of the rest are still racial in nature, such as his stirring defense of Melissa Harris-Perry, claiming she had no need to apologize for crudely mocking Mitt Romney’s adopted black grandchild.

DeVega’s race-baiting sometimes verges on the violent. The riot following Freddie Gray’s death is an “uprising,” a “desperate plea for justice in an era of police brutality and white-on-black murder by the state.” Even when his rhetoric doesn’t literally defend riots, it’s difficult to imagine DeVega’s rhetoric about white Americans being acceptable for any other race. Take this line, for instance, mulling whether blacks would be justified in shooting any whites who come near them, apparently in reaction to whites doing the same:

The approved discourse does not include any acknowledgment of how black and brown people should for reasons both historic and contemporary be terrified of white violence. Whiteness imagines itself as neutral and benign. Consequently, white privilege blinds most white folks of the ability to critically self-reflect on such matters.

Ironically, despite his constant torrent of outrage against white America, one of DeVega’s articles from 2012 urges “angry white conservatives” to “chill out” following President Obama’s reelection.
