Just a few hours after the tragic death of two reporters shot live on the air, journalists took to Twitter to politicize the attack, blame the NRA and aggressively push a pro gun-control agenda.
Horrifying. Another proud moment for the NRA. Thank you, NYC, for your strict gun laws! https://t.co/RyW73dh5nL

If I’m ever killed in a senseless mass shooting, please politicize my death to pass laws that prevent other people from dying the same way. — Ian Millhiser (@imillhiser) July 24, 2015
“Let’s submit to a world where random people are violently killed in order to feed a few people’s vigilante fantasies!” -The NRA — Ian Millhiser (@imillhiser) August 26, 2015
On days like this, does the NRA still bother to go into crisis mode? Or do they just say “fuck it, this is America.” — Ian Millhiser (@imillhiser) August 26, 2015
Vox editor Ezra Klein took to Twitter to talk about gun violence in America, even to say that we wouldn’t have as many suicides if it weren’t for guns.
3. And other countries don’t have this many insane, awful tragedies, and there are reasons for that, reasons we can learn from — Ezra Klein (@ezraklein) August 26, 2015
For Ezra, the reason would be too little gun control.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe pushed for gun control in an interview with WTOP just after the attack.
“It goes back to what I’ve talked about for a long time,” McAuliffe said. “There are too many guns in the hands of people who should not have guns. This is why I’ve long advocated for background checks. I’m a gun owner. I’m a hunter, but you know, I went through background checks myself to get it. We’ve got to, in America, We’ve got to come together. There is too much gun violence in the United States of America.”
