Wednesday is the 99-year anniversary of one the great accomplishments in the history of sports. On Oct. 7, 1916, the Georgia Tech football team edged out a win against Cumberland College 222-0.
Georgia Tech John Heisman, for whom the Heisman Trophy is named, wanted to exact revenge against Cumberland for a 1915 loss in baseball to Cumberland according to the NCAA. However, there was one hitch in Heisman’s plan. Cumberland had disbanded its football team before the Oct. 7 showdown, but was contractually obligated to play Georgia Tech or pay $3,000.
Cumberland decided to throw together a ragtag team and travel to play Georgia Tech. The team probably wishes it had just paid the $3,000.
It didn’t get a first down, and gave up 32 touchdowns on 978 rushing yards, according to ESPN. Cumberland finished with -42 yards of total offense. (RELATED: Odell Beckham Jr. Allegedly Threw Multiple Punches In Last Game [VIDEO])
Cumberland College’s greatest accomplishment in this game might be that they got out of the game with all its players still alive.
