Four Secret Service agents protecting Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were injured Tuesday night in a fatal car crash in New Hampshire.
A car crossed the road’s double yellow line and hit the on-duty agents in a head-on collision that killed civilian driver, Bruce Danforth, 45. The two other passengers with Danforth were also injured. The accident happened around 7 p.m. in Wakefield, New Hampshire, WMUR 9 reports.
The agents were not with Clinton at the time, but were on official business for the candidate, according to Robert Hoback, a spokesman for the Secret Service.
“I was saddened and concerned to hear about the serious accident that occurred last night in New Hampshire in which four Secret Service agents were injured and a passenger in a second car killed,” Clinton said in a statement Wednesday. “My husband and I send our prayers and condolences to all the victims and their families. We are grateful everyday for the service, dedication, and professionalism of the U.S. Secret Service.”
State Police Lt. Kevin Duffy said there was no evidence the agents had done anything to cause the accident.
“At this time, our personnel have sustained what is described as serious, but non life threatening injuries,” Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy said in a statement. “Please join us as we keep all the victims of this accident and their families in our thoughts and prayers.”
The extent of everyone’s injuries is unclear. Police are still looking into the crash.
