One of the super PACs operating on behalf of [crscore]Ted Cruz[/crscore] responded to Donald Trump’s latest attacks against the Texas senator with an ad featuring the words of Mr. Trump himself.
The ad, titled “Controversial,” was put out on Sunday by pro-Cruz super PAC Reigniting The Promise and combines various shots of Cruz with audio from a Trump speech at a February 2014 fundraising dinner where he introduced Cruz and called him a “special guy.”
“Now one of the reasons I like Ted Cruz so much,” Trump is heard saying, “is that he’s not controversial.” The line about the fiery senator draws laughs from the crowd before Trump continues: “But the truth is, he shouldn’t be controversial because what he’s doing is right.” Trump goes on to call Cruz “a special guy” and a “very, very, popular and important figure in all of our lives.” The remarks present a stark contrast to Trump’s recent comments, in which he called Cruz a “nasty guy” and said “nobody likes him.”
Sunday’s ad was just the latest in a war of words between the Cruz and Trump camps. Cruz ruffled feathers last week for criticizing Trump over his “New York values.”Trump has argued that the comment was offensive in light of the city’s response to the 9/11 terror attacks, while Cruz has claimed he was referencing Trump’s past support of abortion and gay marriage.
According to The Washington Post, the ad is part of a coordinated six-figure ad buy from a coalition pro-Cruz groups calling themselves Keep The Promise.
The Trump campaign has not yet responded to the ad.
