Staunch anti-Donald Trump super Pac founder Katie Packer claimed Tuesday that “there’s no Illuminati in the Republican Party” that could “give” Trump the nomination at the Republican convention if he doesn’t get the required 1,237 delegates before July.
In an interview on “MSNBC Live” with Craig Melvin on Tuesday, Packer said that if Trump doesn’t get 1,237 delegates, “there is virtually no mechanism to hand it to a candidate that doesn’t have a majority, a plurality notwithstanding.”
Melvin asked Packer when her efforts to defeat Trump “become futile.”
She responded, “Well, at the point at which he gets 1,237 delegates. There is no mechanism to just hand somebody the nomination if they can’t get 1,237 delegates. You saw even in those numbers he still isn’t at 50 percent. He doesn’t represent 50 percent plus one of the Republican electorate, and that’s who gets to choose who the nominee is.”
“The national polls don’t really matter anymore. Statewide wins don’t really matter anymore,” Packer continued. “What matters after today is just all about delegates. And we’re going to be focusing very aggressively on every place that we can deprive him of delegates and very aggressively focusing on depriving him of 1,237 delegates on the convention floor, and we think we’re going to succeed at that. And my money is on somebody other than Donald Trump emerging as the Republican nominee.”
Melvin then asked Packer about the reaction if Trump doesn’t receive 1,237 delegates but has a “plurality” of support.
Packer retorted that it wouldn’t be “stripping anybody of the nomination” because Trump did not receive the required number of delegates.
Packer argued that “it would be unprecedented to hand the nomination to somebody who doesn’t have 1,237 delegates. It’s each candidate’s responsibility to collect 1,237 delegates on the floor of the convention. There is virtually no mechanism to hand it to a candidate that doesn’t have a majority, a plurality notwithstanding. There’s no Illuminati in the Republican Party that can say, ‘Well, you got close, so we’re just going to just give it to you.’ Each candidate has to get 1,237 delegates. That’s the rule.”
