Every country in the European Union should hold a referendum to decide whether to stay or leave, Marine Le Pen, leader of the French political party Front National, said Saturday.
Le Pen praised Britain’s decision to hold a vote, popularly known as “Brexit,” and referred to the upcoming June 23 referendum as a “key moment in European history,” Europe1 reports.
Unfortunately for Brexit supporters, it seems as though the camp that wants Britain to remain in the EU is pulling ahead, according to current poll results. About 52 percent of respondents in an ORB survey said they would vote for the “remain” option, while just 43 percent would vote to leave.
Le Pen’s remarks in Romania at a conference put on by the Europe of Nations and Freedom group raise the possibility of other countries mimicking Britain’s efforts. The Europe of Nations and Freedom group is a collection of parties represented in the European Parliament, which includes Lega Nord in Italy and the Freedom Party in Austria.
In March, the Express reported that Germany’s right wing AfD party also wants Germany to hold a referendum. The AfD has bgeen gaining huge ground given the incredible unpopularity of current German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“I want every member state to decide what is better for them, and the only way we can really do that is to have a referendum, like the UK.” deputy party chairman Beatrix von Storch MEP told the Express.
“Schengen has collapsed already. Under Schengen Europe’s borders are supposed to be protected,” Storch added. “They’re not.”
A referendum in Germany would likely take on the appellation of “Gerxit.”
Recent poll results indicate 53 percent of the French also want a referendum on the issue, which would likely be known as “Frexit.”
“I also hope the French will not have to wait too long for a similar opportunity. I hope that all peoples can express themselves on this subject,” Le Pen added during her talk.
