A new guidance written by the Boarding School Association urges teachers to address transgender students with the pronoun “zie” in an effort to “queer the education system.”
Teachers are supposed to learn a “new language” in order to not offend transgender students by calling them by the wrong pronoun, reports The Telegraph.
“Teachers, heads and deputy heads were asking questions about these issues and they felt they were in the dark on what was politically correct and had fears of causing offence as young people largely between the ages of 13 and 18 were questioning their gender identity,” Alex Thompson, deputy chief executive of the Boarding School Association, told The Telegraph.
The advice is part of an effort that includes “queering the education system.”
This is not the first measure passed in English boarding schools trying to instill a “gender neutral” agenda.
Last month, the Girls’ School Association advised all girl boarding schools to stop using the terms “girls” and “young women”, claiming that such terms might offend transgender students. “In assemblies, instead of saying ‘Girls, go to lessons,’ staff should consider saying ‘Pupils, go to lessons,’ or ‘Students, go to lessons.’ ‘I do not want anyone to think that girls’ or boys’ schools are invested in one way of being a girl or one way of being a boy.”Caroline Jordan, President of the GSA, told the Sunday Times.
Other schools have also put in place a “gender neutral dress code.”
Brighton College got rid of its dress code and implemented one that allowed boy and girls to wear clothes of the opposite gender. Girls who transitioned to boys can now wear pants while boys who transitioned to girls can wear skirts.
