Pennsylvania Rep. Tom Marino was one of the first members of Congress to endorse Donald Trump for president, and told The Daily Caller News Foundation Thursday it was because of the billionaire’s Washington-outsider status.
“Donald Trump was my first, first choice and I took a little heat from that from some of my members, but now they’re saying to me, ‘Hey, can you get me on board the Trump team?’ and I say ‘You can come on board anytime you want,'” he told TheDCNF at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.
“How’s it been going the past 30 years with politicians being president? We’re $20 trillion in debt, we have 20 million people out of work and underemployed, our borders are wide open, businesses are leaving the country in droves, terrorists are coming into this country, the standard of living has decreased, as far as our status on foreign affairs – it’s a disaster under this president.”
Marino said he believes the country needs someone who is proven capable of creating jobs and isn’t concerned with being overly politically correct.
Trump has repeatedly said he thinks he can win the Keystone State in the general election — Pennsylvania has gone to Democrats in presidential elections since 1992.
Marino, who is the chair for the state of Pennsylvania, said after helping run Trump’s grassroots campaign during the primaries, he believes the state can flip.
“I knew we could win because I listened to my constituents, I listened to people across the state and we ended up winning all 67 counties by a very large majority and they said that couldn’t be done. I said Donald would have the 1,237 delegates before he got to California, people said ‘You’re crazy, that’s not going to happen,’ that happened.” he said.
“It’s people are so sick and tired or being sick and tired of Washington … People are fed up of having their hard-working dollars taken away from them by the government and the government not producing anything.”
