A poll released Wednesday shows Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton in the key swing state of Florida.
The Florida Atlantic University poll is the first since early July that shows Trump leading Clinton. Trump is ahead with 43 percent, Clinton follows with 41 percent, Libertarian candidate Gov. Gary Johnson is at eight percent, and five percent are undecided.
“The race between Clinton and Trump among Hispanics in Florida is closer than it is nationally,” said Monica Escaleras, director of the FAU’s Business and Economics Polling Initiative, said in a press release. “Some of that is probably the Cuban vote. Trump’s support among Latinos in Florida is helping him stay competitive.”
Clinton leads among Hispanic voters 50 percent to 40 percent, and among black voters 68 percent to 20 percent. Trump leads among white voters 49 percent to 33 percent. Previous polling has shown Trump performing strongly with Hispanics in Florida, one in July showed him ahead with Hispanic voters 49 percent to 26 percent.
A late July poll breaks down Hispanics in the state by Cubans and non-Cubans. Clinton leads among non-Cubans 61 percent to 26 percent. While Trump is leading among Cubans 45 percent to 34 percent. Cubans are the largest Hispanic ethnic group in Florida.
Cubans are a distinct Latin voter bloc as they receive asylum status in the United States and thus are not effected by Trump’s immigration proposals.
The FAU poll showed Trump leading among men 46 percent to 36 percent. Democratic nominee Clinton is ahead among women 45 percent to 41 percent. Clinton leads in every age group but voters aged 35 to 54. Trump leads among independent voters 47 percent to 26 percent.
The poll found that the top issue for voters is dissatisfaction with government, followed by immigration, and ISIS.
The FAU poll of 1,200 registered likely voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percent.
