White’s estranged husband filed a lawsuit against the actor blaming him for his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend’s death. Carrey responded to the lawsuit in a statement Monday obtained by People Magazine.

“What a terrible shame,” Carrey began. “It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world,” Carrey said in the statement.

“I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved,” Carrey added. “Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control.”

Mark Burton, legally married to White at the time of her death, has filed a lawsuit accusing Carrey of attempting to “conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability” in her death. (RELATED: Jim Carrey Hit With Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Ex-Girlfriend Commits Suicide)

The suit states that Carrey used “his immense wealth and celebrity status to illegally obtain and distribute highly addictive and, in this case, deadly substances.” Carrey has been accused of obtaining the drugs under the name “Arthur King,” and subsequently providing them to Ms. White.

An autopsy report conducted following her death found that White had ingested four prescription drugs, three of which were prescribed under the name “Arthur King.” It has also been reported that Carrey texted White the night before her death asking if she knew where his painkillers were.

Carrey and White reportedly split about a week before her death. “I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace,” Carrey’s statement concluded.
