Democrat Hillary Clinton conceded the presidential election to her opponent Donald Trump Wednesday, apologizing for losing the race in a teary-eyed address.
“This is painful,” she told her supporters. “And it will be for a long time. But I want you to remember this. Our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was about the country we love and about building an America that’s hopeful, inclusive and big hearted.”
Clinton’s campaign promised the speech at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, but it was after 11:30 a.m. before she finally made it to the stage. She began by saying she is “sorry” for losing the election and saying she hopes Trump will be a successful president.
“We must accept this result and then look to the future,” she said. “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”
Clinton addressed women specifically, saying “nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.”
“I know we have still not shattered that highest glass ceiling,” she added. “But someday someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now. And to all the little girls watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.”
Clinton thanked her supporters and said the country owes President Barack Obama a huge debt of gratitude.
She concluded the speech by quoting from the book of Galatians. “Let us not grow weary in doing good for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart,” she said.
