The National Women’s Hockey League adopted a new transgender resolution that would allow men to join the team under certain conditions.

The NWHL emphasized their commitment to “recognize all forms of gender expression” in their announcement Tuesday, reports NY Mag.

People born female, regardless of their gender identity, are allowed to join the team, according to latest guidelines. Men who have transitioned to female are also allowed to play, provided they have declared their gender identity as “female,” the guidelines said.

The NWHL provides certain conditions under which men who have transitioned to women can play. They are not allowed to change their declaration as female for at least four years. The hockey league also regulates the testosterone limits of transgender women.

“The athlete’s total testosterone level in serum must remain in the typical range of women athletes throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category,” the guidelines states.

Athletes may receive routine testing to make sure their testosterone levels fall into the acceptable range of female athletes.

Chris Mosier, a transgender Olympic athlete, helped with the NWHL policy.

“It’s a unique opportunity to continue to move the conversation forward and accelerate that social progress and to be that benchmark, and to remain approachable and available for these discussions,” Mosier said.

The NWHL became one of the first professional sports leagues in North America to have a transgender person compete openly on their team. Harrison Browne, who plays on the Buffalo Beauts, came out as a transgender man in October.

“I’m still the same player, I’m still playing in the body that I did last year, I’m still the same exact person. I’m just a different name and different pronouns, that’s it. I’m still Brownie,” Browne said.
