A U.S. service member was killed in a commando raid deep inside Yemen Sunday, the first U.S. casualty under President Donald Trump.
Three additional U.S. service members were also wounded in the raid on al-Qaida militants. The Pentagon indicated 14 al-Qaida members were killed in the raid.
Al-Qaida’s Yemen affiliate is one of its most dangerous branches, and actively plans attacks on U.S. soil. The Pentagon statement said information from the raid “will likely provide insight into the planning of future terror plots.”
U.S. Army General Joseph Votel indicated the raid was carried out by members of SEAL Team 6.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our elite service members. The sacrifices are very profound in our fight against terrorists who threaten innocent peoples across the globe,” he said in a statement.
The Pentagon also said an aircraft went down during the raid, which the New York Times says is a V-22 Ospery.
