Donald Trump awarded a Purple Heart to an Army sergeant Saturday who was wounded in Afghanistan.
Though most of the press expected the president to play a round of golf that day, the president instead took a trip to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with First Lady Melania Trump. It was there he gave Sgt. First Class Alvaro Barrientos the award.

Barrientos’s right leg was amputated below the knee after he was injured in March.
“When I heard about this, I wanted to do it myself,” Trump said. “Congratulations on behalf of Melania and myself and the entire nation. Tremendous, tremendous job, congratulations.”

Trump stuck around after the ceremony and toured the facility while visiting with other service members for about 90 minutes.
