Prosecutors announced Wednesday that an Auschwitz bookkeeper, a 96-year-old former Nazi SS guard, is fit to be imprisoned for war crimes.

Kathrin Soefker, spokeswoman for the prosecutors, said that a doctor’s examination found former Nazi Oskar Groening physically capable of enduring his four year prison sentence with proper medical care, according to an Associated Press report.

The German Federal Court of Justice upheld a lower court’s ruling in 2016 that convicted Groening of murdering 300,000 Jews in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Groening remained free, pending the ruling on whether he stood fit to go to prison.

“No one should have taken part in Auschwitz,” Groening told the court during his 2015 trial. “I know that. I sincerely regret not having lived up to this realization earlier and more consistently.”

The court has not yet sent a formal summons for Groening to begin his four year sentence.
