CNN political analyst John Avlon incorrectly identified “Rocket Man” as a John Lennon song on Thursday morning.
The song, of course, is actually by Elton John.
“I mean, [rocket man] is not really an accurate phrase,” Avlon asserted on CNN’s “New Day.” “It’s a John Lennon song, and it’s the president extending domestic politics and his style, that pugnacious style, some folks could describe as having a whiff of the demagogue.”
CNN anchors Alisyn Camerota and Chris Cuomo seemed perturbed by Avlon’s mistake, even though Avlon himself didn’t seem to realize his error.
“Isn’t it an Elton John song?” Camerota replied.
“It is, in fact, an Elton John song,” Avlon confirmed.
“You said John Lennon,” Camerota and Cuomo both replied.
“Oh! That’s a terrible mistake on my part,” Avlon said before trying to defend himself. “They did collaborate on one song, ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night,’ in my defense.”
