Ontario’s Liberal government passed legislation Wednesday that makes it illegal for pro-life supporters to protest anywhere near abortion sites.
The bill to create bubble zones of exclusion around clinics, pharmacies or private homes that support the abortion industry was supported by the opposition Conservatives.
Pro-life protests will be banned anywhere from 50 to 150 yards around abortion facilities. Pro-life proponents will not be allowed to carry signs and placards or even distribute literature about the medical effects of an abortion.
Provincial Attorney General Yasir Naqvi was jubilant that there was no opposition to the bill within the provincial legislature.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anger and outrage in other quarters, including the largest pro-life organization in Canada.
Campaign Life Coalition’s Ontario president Mary Ellen Douglas told The Daily Caller Thursday that the bill is “a flagrant attack on free speech from people who are dancing to the Planned Parenthood tune.”
Douglas said she is “utterly disappointed” with the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party and its leader, Patrick Brown, whom she says misrepresented his pro-life stance when he ran for the leadership of his party.
“He thinks he’ll get more votes by betraying his pro-life supporters, but he’s mistaken,” Douglas continued, saying that Campaign Life is examining every option for mounting a legal challenge to the legislation. “The abortion industry would like us to be as silent as the unborn that they murder; but we won’t be,” she said.
Only one Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Ontario voted against the Liberal legislation: Jack MacLaren, a former Conservative MLA who was booted from the party’s caucus for his maverick opinions and now sits as the solitary member of the Trillium Party.
