New York City terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov said he was proud of the attack in Manhattan Tuesday and bragged about its success from his hospital bed.
Saipov told police he refused to apologize for the attack and was in fact very proud of what he had done, saying that if he hadn’t crashed into a school bus, he would’ve continued the attack further, CBS News reports.
Saipov drove a rental truck onto a bicycle path alongside the Hudson River on Tuesday afternoon, and mowed down pedestrians, killing eight people and injuring about a dozen others. After hitting pedestrians and crashing into a bus, he got out of his truck, screamed “Allahu Akbar” and brandished imitation firearms, at which point police shot him in the abdomen and then took him to a local hospital for treatment. He is now out of surgery and will likely survive.
Police found a note near the truck in English stating that the attack was done on behalf of the Islamic State, though ISIS has not yet officially made any claims of responsibility.
Saipov is an Uzbek national who moved to the U.S. in 2010 and obtained a green card as part of the Diversity Visa Program. He’s lived in various regions of the country. Law enforcement sources told CNN that his most recent location was New Jersey.
Notably, Saipov was interviewed by authorities in 2015 because he was a point of contact for two men on a counterterrorism list. He nevertheless passed the background check for Uber, but has since been banned from the app.
